Es una banda estadounidense cuyos miembros provienen de Belleville y Kearny, Nueva Jersey y, su baterista, de Chicago.

El género musical de este grupo es muy debatido, ellos tienen influencias de Iron Maiden, Black Flag, The Misfits, The Smiths, Morrissey, The Cure, Queen y de los Pixies. A principios de su carrera su estilo era claramente el post hardcore, pero ahora el grupo ha madurado musicalmente, y se le asocia más bien al rock alternativo.

El quinteto ha vendido más de 5 millones de copias solo en Estados Unidos, por lo que se le considera una de las más influyentes bandas de la década.

El nombre del grupo, que puede traducirse del inglés como "Mi Romance Químico", viene de un libro escrito por Irvine Welsh llamado "Éxtasis" (en inglés "Ecstasy: three tales of chemical romance"). Fue sugerido por Mikey Way, bajista del grupo y hermano menor de Gerard, el vocalista. Su nombre es a veces abreviado como "MCR" y llamado "My Chem" por fans.

Según el grupo, el mensaje que quieren transmitir es ¨no tengas miedo a vivir¨, punto explicitado en la canción Famous last words.
